But...but...but....you PROMISED!!!

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10590145

That's right, former MP's have been pushed around for too long & they're not gonna take it anymore!!. Unless it's a 90% travel subsidy. That they will take.

Immediate impressions whilst reading this were twofold.

Firstly - what do you mean there's an organisation that represents 140 former MP's. What the heck for? What do they do now anyway? Are they such an oppressed minority in New Zealand that they need this type of representation? Poor kittens.

Second thing is how said representatives always try to paint themselves as victims on the same scale as those suffering from the upcoming Telecom redundancies. "It's nothing to do with us being greedy, bloated plutocrats, oh no, it's the PRINCIPLE of the thing" Yeah, we fear the very roots of democracy shall be severed if you can no longer cruise around the world at a 90% discount.

Hmmmm I'm suddenly reminded of the old maxim about sarcasm being the lowest form of wit....sorry.

What stands out to me as I mull it over a little more is another issue entirely. I have no problem with travel perks & the importance of honouring a contracts. It's more a matter of how out of touch these people have become. There was a time when each of these former MP's were regarded as civil servants. Currently you have a nation of scared, hurting, 'recessioned' people, who naturally feel that if this is a season for them tightening their belts, surely those they once elected should follow suit, even if just for a little while.

Might be too much to hope for kids, but it's a lovely thought :)
